17 Different Types of Coffee You Should Know as a Coffee Lover

Almost all coffee lovers cannot start their happy day without a cup of coffee. Many people have included coffee as part of their lifestyle.

Not to mention that some studies mention that there is some health benefit of drinking coffee.

Some of them are improving energy levels and lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes.

As it has become part of life, there are so many new coffee drinkers. It especially happens because coffee shops have developed so much, from a few to plentiful.

Besides, almost all restaurants put some coffee on their menu. The prices are varied, ranging from cheap to the most expensive coffee.

If you want to start this new lifestyle, it is good to learn 17 different types of coffee to know your favorite one.

A. Coffee Beans

Before learning any coffee, you need to know that there are so many types of coffee beans.

The two most famous among them are Robusta and Arabica. Each of them has a different aroma and flavor.

1. Robusta

The shape of Robusta coffee beans is round and bigger. Its caffeine content is higher, between 1.7 to 4 percent.

This makes it bitter, but it has lower acidity. Some aromas that come from the coffee are chocolate, peanuts, and soil.

2. Arabica

Arabica coffee beans are longer. Its caffeine content is lesser than Robusta, which is 0.8 to 1.4%.

This low caffeine makes it less bitter, but it has higher acidity. It has a fruity or flowery aroma. It is accompanied by a nutty aroma as well.

The taste is mild and full. This makes this type of coffee beans more expensive. For information, this commodity rules the world coffee market.

B. Basic Coffee Drinks

You may find that ordering a cup of coffee can be a little bit longer. However, basic coffee drinks are not that long to make.

You can make it use a French press, coffee maker, or a pour over at home.

1. Black Coffee

Black coffee is only one of the basic coffee drinks. However, the type of black coffee is quite plenty.

There are black coffee with milk, black coffee with cream, and black coffee with milk and sugar. But now, we’re talking about regular black coffee.

It is a type of coffee that you drink right after being brewed from your coffee maker. No need to add anything.

2. Turkish coffee

The name comes from the fact that this coffee comes from Middle East. If you want to make one, you need to add some coffee ground into hot sugary water until you see some foam.

The more foam you get, the better the taste. This method of serving coffee is a tradition in Middle East, especially Turkey.

3. Cold-Brew

Most people use hot water to brew their coffee to make the coffee grounds release its extract quickly.

The cold-brew method, however, uses cold water, instead. Thus, this method requires so much longer time than usual.

Most people will prepare this drink at night to be able to enjoy it in the following morning.

4. Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is different from cold brew one. You brew it with hot water, but you need to cool it before you drink it.

C. Espresso Drinks

This popular drink usually requires a coffee machine to make. This is done to produce the best coffee you can taste.

1. Espresso Coffee

We can say that espresso coffee is the base for some coffee drinks. It is produced by shooting boiling water through the tamped fine coffee ground under pressure. It results in 25 ml of concentrated coffee called espresso.

2. Double Espresso

Add another shot to the espresso to get 50 ml of concentrated coffee. Now, you call it double espresso.

3. Ristretto

The method of making this coffee is similar to that of espresso. The difference is that you need to halve the amount of hot water. Thus, you get a more concentrated and darker coffee drink.

4. Americano

Espresso is also a base of Americano. Just add 2/3 of a cup of hot water into a shot of espresso. Double espresso can also be used for this type of coffee.

5. Moka

When you brew some coffee grounds in a Moka pot, you’ll get a Moka coffee.

The drink is obtained after a coffee extraction is made, just like how you make espresso. It is similar but is also different from espresso.

The pressure in the pot is a lot lower than that of an espresso machine.

D. Espresso + Milk Based Drinks

This type of coffee is popular in some younger-aged communities as it is fancy and milder.

This is due to the addition of milk and other ingredients. You may want to order it while hanging out with your friends.

1. Cappuccino

Cappuccino is a combination of the same amount of espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk foam. Make sure that the total amount of those ingredients fill up your cup.

2. Café Latte

To make this type of coffee, fill your cup with one espresso shot (1/3 of a full cup). Fill up the rest with steamed milk.

If you can create some latte art with the help of milk, you’re probably a barista.

3. Mocha

To make a mocha, you need one shot of espresso, chocolate powder or syrup, and milk. Mix the espresso and chocolate powder or syrup.

Then add one layer of steamed milk and another layer of foam. Finally, sprinkle some chocolate powder on top.

4. Piccolo Latte

It is a combination of ristretto, and steamed milk added with foam. Piccolo latte is also called Macchiato.

5. Short Macchiato

Similar to piccolo latte but replace ristretto with one espresso shot. There you have it.

6. Long Macchiato

You need to add another shot of espresso to short macchiato, that’s long macchiato.

7. Flat White

You will find this type of coffee a lot in Australia and New Zealand. Flat white is a short macchiato or long macchiato without added foam.

8. Affogato

Are you an ice cream lover? If so, you will probably love this. You will need one scoop of vanilla ice cream and one espresso shot.

Pour the espresso onto the ice cream. Voila! Enjoy your dessert.

Those are 17 types of coffee that you need to know. There are still so many types of coffee out there.
