20 Types of Cheese You Probably Don’t Know About

Cheese has been widely used in various recipes all over the world.

The delicious taste and creamy texture are some of the reason why this food is highly incorporated in various dishes.

Aside from its delicious taste, cheese also contains high nutritional value. That is why cheese is a type of food that you cannot resist.

Different kinds of cheese create different taste and texture, and there are a lot of types of cheese out there. Here are some of them.

1. Gruyere Cheese

The first type in this list coming from Switzerland. It is cream to orange in colour with a hard and dense texture.

However, it has a mild and strong flavour. It is delicious to be eaten alone, but it can be a great accompaniment for various type of cuisine.

2. Ricotta Cheese

Unlike other cheese that usually made of milk, Ricotta cheese is made of whey.

This Italian cheese appears like curds with a white or light cream colour. The texture is soft and creamy, with a mild and slightly sweet taste.

Compared to other types of cheese, Ricotta is probably the healthiest cheese because of its lower calorie content and high protein.

Additionally, there is also a low-fat Ricotta cheese variant that is protein-dense, making it cheese of choice for many athletes.

3. Mascarpone Cheese

Mascarpone is categorized as cream cheese and has a soft, creamy texture. It has a white colour with a thick and creamy appearance and almost looks like yoghurt.

It is a great addition to sauces because of its texture and a very mild taste. This Italian cheese makes a great additional ingredient to risotto or tiramisu.

4. Roquefort

This French cheese is categorized ad blue cheese. It is white with large blue veins in it.

The cheese has a semi-hard and crumbly texture with a strong and tangy taste.

The bluish mould is from Penicillium Roqueforti spores injected into the cheese curds, which gives this cheese a distinct taste.

5. Brie Cheese

Brie cheese has a creamy texture and contains high fat. This pale-yellow cheese with white rind has a generally mild taste.

This cheese type originates from Brie, Northern France.

6. Parmesan Cheese

Also known as Parmigiano-Reggiano, this one is also an Italian Cheese. It has a hard, crumbly, and granular texture with medium to strong taste, depending on the age.

Due to its strong taste, this cheese is usually used as condiments rather than eaten alone.

7. Gouda Cheese

This Netherland cheese has light to dark yellow colour with semi-hard to hard texture. Usually, it has mild to strong taste.

However, other variation of Gouda can have different taste, texture, and flavour depends on how old they are matured.

8. Cotija Cheese

Cotija cheese originates from Mexico and has a dry and coarse texture with a mild and salty taste.

However, the more mature one usually has a tangier flavour with a little bit nutty taste. This cheese makes tacos and salads taste even better.

9. Fontina Cheese

This cheese originates from Italia and is made from cow’s milk. This pale cream-coloured cheese is known for its creamy flavour with a little bit of earthy taste.

While there is a lot of variation of this cheese from other countries, the original one has a more intense flavour.

10. Manchego Cheese

This Spain cheese is made of Manchega sheep milk. It has a buttery taste with sharp taste with a little bit saltiness.

This dense cheese is delicious eaten alone but tastes perfect when served with membrillo.

11. Cheddar Cheese

Cheddar Cheese is the most commonly available and the most famous one. In general, this Cheese has a mild to pungent taste with a soft and smooth texture.

This pale white to orange coloured cheese originates from Cheddar village, England.

12. Goat Cheese

This French cheese is also known as Chèvre. The moist cheese has a little bit sour and lemony taste.

The cheese is best used as salads condiments or as accompaniment for sandwiches.

13. Boursin Cheese

This cheese has a soft, crumbly and creamy texture which make it best used for spread. This French cheese has a flavour that reminds people of cream cheese. 

14. Havarti Cheese

Harvati Cheese is original to Denmark and has a pale-yellow colour with little spots around it.

It is a soft creamy cheese with mild to sharp taste and a little bit salty. It is delicious when grilled and a perfect accompaniment for wine, fruit, or cured meat.

15. Asiago Cheese

It is an Italian cheese made of cow’s milk. Asiago cheese has a smooth and crumbly texture with brownish-grey coloured rind.

This cheese is perfect as salads or soups condiment, and even great for pasta.

16. Mozzarella Cheese

This soft and chewy cheese is also one of the most well-known cheese in the world.

Many people must have also notice that this is Italian cheese. Originally, it is made of Buffalo’s milk, but today, people make Mozzarella from other types of milk as well. It has a soft and chewy texture with a mild taste.

17. Gorgonzola Cheese

This cheese variety originates from Italy. It has pale yellow and white skin appearance and has creamy to a crumbly texture.

Gorgonzola has two cheese varieties, the Dolce and Piccante. Gorgonzola is categorized as a blue cheese, which has a sharp and strong taste.

However, compared to other blue cheese, Gorgonzola is less strong.

18. Romano Cheese

This Italian cheese has a dense, brittle, and crumbly texture with pale yellow colour. It has a sharp and tangy taste accompanied with a strong aroma.

19. Camembert

Camembert is considered as one of the most popular cheese in the world. It originates from Northern France, just like Brie Cheese does.

Its texture and appearance look similar to Brie Cheese. However, Camembert tastes stronger than Brie, and it has a slightly pungent taste.

20. Cottage Cheese

This type of cheese is closer to Ricotta and originates from the United States. While other cheese looks like blocks, this one appears like white curds with a moist and creamy texture.

It has a milder taste, with a combination of salty and creamy taste. Although it is delicious, the appearance comes off as off-putting for some people.

Aside from those twenty types of cheese mentioned above, there are many more types available in the world with distinct texture and flavour.

Not only deemed as healthy food, but cheese is also a perfect accompaniment or condiments for various dishes.
